Flattening

1) rim hammered inside, using hammer or stone

2) rim hammered outside on a stone or hard flat surface. Gives pretty shape or flat shape

3) pliers work well

4) a slot cut into a piece of metal can be used for gripping the edge. 

The slot needs to be wide enough to take the ribbed edge of the top.
